Not All Laser Cutters Are Created Equal: How to Choose Based on Your Actual Workload

If I were expanding our shop today to cut aluminum often (say, weekly production volumes), I'd choose a fiber laser over plasma for thin parts (< 1/8 inch) due to the edge quality. For thicker structural parts, a good plasma system with a CNC table is more practical.

How to decide which scenario applies to you

This is the part where you have to be honest with yourself. Not with what you wish your workload was, but with what your actual orders look like.

  1. List your top 3 materials by cutting/engraving volume for the next 6 months.
  2. Estimate max thickness. If your thickest metal part is 1mm steel, a fiber laser is great. If you're cutting 1/2-inch plate, look at plasma.
